The Complete ICBC Claim Timeline: What Happens After a Car Accident?
A plain-language ICBC claim timeline after a car accident in BC — when to seek care, how kinesiology fits, and what to expect in the first weeks.
A car accident is stressful enough without guessing what happens next with ICBC. This timeline covers the practical steps most people move through in British Columbia — and where active rehab / kinesiology usually fits.
Right after the crash (day 0–2)
- Make sure everyone is safe and call emergency services if needed.
- Exchange information and document the scene when you can do so safely.
- Seek medical attention for any pain, dizziness, or limited movement — even if symptoms feel “mild” at first.
- Start or confirm your ICBC claim as soon as practical so treatment pathways can open.
Soft-tissue injuries (whiplash, strains, back pain) often feel worse 24–72 hours later. Early assessment helps you avoid guessing which movements are safe.
The first one to two weeks
Once your claim is active, ICBC may pre-approve certain rehab services. Many people are approved for kinesiology / active rehab sessions in the early window after a motor vehicle accident — often with little or no user fee for covered sessions (coverage depends on your claim).
At Elevation Rehab we help with:
- Clarifying what your approval includes
- Booking an assessment at a Metro Vancouver clinic
- Building a progressive exercise plan around work, sport, and daily life
You do not need a Club16 membership to train with us.
Weeks 2–12: rebuilding capacity
This is usually where guided exercise matters most. Passive rest alone rarely restores strength, confidence, and range of motion after a crash. A kinesiologist coaches you through progressive loading — from gentle mobility into strength and return-to-activity work.
Typical focus areas:
- Neck and shoulder control after whiplash
- Core and hip stability for back pain
- Graded return to driving, desk work, or sport
Track what improves week to week (pain with activity, sleep, lifting tolerance) so you and your care team can adjust.
Beyond three months
If symptoms linger, that does not mean you failed rehab — it means the plan may need another layer (longer sessions, different progressions, or coordinated care). Keep ICBC and your clinicians updated; documentation from active rehab often supports next steps.
